Eileen's Story

When the doctor delivered the news, I couldn't react much. However, when my breast nurse asked about my family, tears began flowing uncontrollably as thoughts of my children overwhelmed me. For two challenging days, I grappled with my emotions, questioning why this was happening to me. Will I survive? What will become of my kids? I'm still young, so why cancer?

It felt like the world was crashing down on me. But I resolved to be brave and maintain a positive outlook. I would fight this battle for my loved ones and sought immediate treatment. The treatment journey proved to be tough. The chemotherapy side effects were difficult to endure, leading me to plead with my oncologist to stop after each session. But there was no bargaining in this regard.

Illness is burdensome, and it is during such challenging times that you discover who truly cares. My children showed unwavering love and sweetness, assuring me of my beauty even when I was bald. They took care of me, staying by my side as I rested. Meanwhile, my family cared for my kids and my husband, despite their busy schedules of accompanying me to treatments and surgeries.

No one can truly understand what I've been through, but I consider myself blessed to have had amazing people standing by my side. I'm grateful that I could confide in my friends during difficult times, as they were always there to listen and provide encouragement.

Surviving cancer involves not only physical but also mental and emotional battles. Cancer was a battle I never expected to fight, but one I will always be proud to have won. I now live each day to the fullest and offer encouragement to those still fighting, assuring them that they can overcome it. I also urge younger women to undergo regular check-ups, as early detection of underlying health conditions can reduce the risk of serious complications in the future.

Cancer is just one chapter in my life. There is life after chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. You will find a new normal, and life will improve.
